The Facts On Fertility
Drugs For Women
Many couples today struggle with fertility
problems, fertility drugs are usually the first treatment
tried. Many women are given prescriptions for clomiphene and
gonadotropins. What are these fertility drugs and how do they
work? Both of these drugs promote ovulation. Clomiohene works
on your brain to get one or even several eggs ready to be
released from your ovaries. Gonadotropins works directly on
your ovaries to prepare the eggs for entering your fallopian
tubes.
These fertility drugs have been used for
over 30 years and have a very high success rate. The only
problem with these fertility drugs is that they can produce
pregnancies resulting in multiple births.
Let’s take a closer look at the fertility
drugs available.
Clomiphene helps women conceive that do not
ovulate regularly or even do not ovulate at all.
Men can also use clomiphene for low sperm count or mobility
of the sperm, or even for the quality of sperm produced.
These fertility drugs are usually taken one 5 day cycle a
month. Clomiphene helps you produce hormones that will trigger
ovulation.
After the cycle is finished your brain releases a hormone
which will tell your ovaries to release mature eggs into your
tubes. If the egg finds a healthy sperm, they are on their
way to your uterus. This will give you a good chance of becoming
pregnant.
Side effects of these fertility drugs can include: mild swelling
of the ovaries, weight gain, depression, irritability, fatigue,
headaches, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, insomnia,
breast tenderness and stomach pain.
The success rate of clomiphene is pretty good. About 80% of
women find they ovulate within the first 3 months of treatment.
Those who do ovulate 40 % become pregnant.
The cost of clomiphene in the United States is about $50 per
cycle.
Gonadotropins will help you conceive if you
have tried other fertility drugs without success.
Gonadotropins is given by injection for 7 to 12 days. These
fertility drugs will help you produce several eggs instead
of just one. After you are finished with these injections
you will then be injected with another drug that tells your
ovaries to let go or mature eggs. If one of your mature eggs
meets a healthy sperm in your tubes, they then travel to your
uterus. Then you will have a great chance of becoming pregnant.
Side effects associated with the fertility drugs gonadotropins
are abdominal tenderness, bloating, fluid retention, and weight
gain.
The success rate for women using gonadotropins are usually
20 to 60 percent become pregnant.
The cost of gonadotropins fertility drugs are about $2,000
to $5,000 per cycle.
If you have ovulation problems caused from
a benign tumor found in your pituitary gland, then the bromocriptine
fertility drugs are for you.
Bromocriptine can be taken by mouth or vagina in pill form.
These fertility drugs are taken for a few months and your
doctor will keep track of your dosage and may adjust it throughout
the months that you take the fertility drugs.
Side effects of bromocriptine are nausea, dizziness, fatigue,
diarrhea, and headaches.
Around 90 percent of women taking these fertility drugs ovulate
for the entire time they are taking the drugs. 65 to 85 percent
of the women do in fact get pregnant.
